Elk
Elk hunting in New Mexico with the Santa Fe Guiding Company is a Blast! New Mexico elk hunting is the best in the west for huge numbers bulls, lots of action and trophy quality. New Mexico elk are big and numerous and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has been able to manage the growing elk herds for both trophy quality and providing a high percentage of success for hunters. The total number of hunters in New Mexico elk hunting units is controlled by limited entry draw that equates to encountering very few other hunters in the field when you are a recipient of one of the special New Mexico elk hunting permits. That "other hunter" in the field practicing blowing his new bugle toy is what we strive to avoid each day in the field by camp locations, penetrating wilderness areas and simply just knowing the landscape better after so many years in the field. The Santa Fe Guiding Company is looking for a few real hunters desiring a fantastic elk hunt in the wilds of New Mexico. We want client hunters that desire small private camps, remote locations, a fair chase hunt putting in a personally strong effort to match their guides in order to increase their odds of a successful hunt.
We conduct our hunts in several areas around New Mexico so that we can offer you the finest elk hunting experience of your dreams. Some hunters desire a hunt full of action with large numbers of bugling bulls where the herd ratio is as high as 80 bulls to 100 cows, while others prefer to head into the seclusion of the back country of the Pecos wilderness where only strong sure footed mountain horses can get them and their camps into while still experienced hunters are willing to pass on huge numbers of elk to have the opportunity to take one of the monster 350 + inch bulls New Mexico produces every year.
The fun in an elk hunt is to hear the bulls bugling out there as we slowly and cautiously close the distance anticipating the size of a trophy bulls antlers to the strength of his bugle. New Mexico elk hunts for archery, muzzleloader and rifle hunters all fall over a rutting period. It is our theory that the very high bull to cow ratio in our select hunt units keeps many cows from being bred and therefore prolongs the rut and bugling action. Most mornings during our antlerless elk harvest hunts in November, we are led to distant herds by bugling bulls! The SFGC believes that an elk hunt without any bugling elk is just another big deer hunt and should be avoided.
Trophy elk come in all shapes, sizes and measurements of antler growth. New Mexico grows huge bulls that are accessible by hard work, experience and knowledge of our hunt units and a bit good luck. The professional guides of the Santa Fe Guiding Company are excellent at finding the elk, field judging elk on the hoof and getting in close to present the best shot opportunity. You, the client hunter needs to decide if this is "your" trophy and make the shot. Elk hunting is kind of like a box of chocolates- you never know what you are going to get. The SFGC provides fully outfitted & guided camps, drop camps and daily guide services in our favorite select special hunt locations. Our camps are as comfortable as we can make them by where they are located and that is requested by the client hunters. All of the SFGC guides are excellent archery hunters themselves, specializing in getting our client archers and gun hunters in very close to the bull for an awesome elk hunting experience. In recent years, some of us have discarded the high tech world of modern archery to pursue game with the pure archery tradition of our mentors, face to face and mono y mono with our prey, practicing the purest form of archery for enjoyment and woodsman ship. Traditional archers with their stick bows and wooden arrows have place at our camp fire and in our hunts. All of the Santa Fe Guiding Company professional elk hunting guides are wilderness experts licensed by the New Mexico department of Game and fish, certified in 1st aid and CPR to assure your safety on our trophy elk hunts in the wilds of New Mexico. Elk license are procured through the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish elk license draw in early April of each spring.
